Delicious Food – our restaurant
The Alpenrösli restaurant is a place to arrive: for locals, hikers, alpinists – and for everyone who wants to enjoy good food in a warm atmosphere. Hospitality, warmth, and the view of the Ried Glacier and the surrounding 4000-meter peaks make every visit special.
Here you can let go of everyday life. The tranquility of Gasenried takes effect immediately – no noise, just mountains, light, and vastness.
In the afternoon, coffee, cake, and small dishes await you on our sun terrace. In the evening, enjoy one of our regional dishes or barbecue under the open sky. Our inn is meant to be a lively meeting place where guests and locals come together – with fair prices and a genuine connection to the region.
Regional delicacies
We cook with passion and products from the surrounding area: The potatoes for our Rösti grow directly below the village, lovingly cared for by Ewald and harvested by hand – as they have been for generations. Our alpine cheese, dried meat and house sausage are made in traditional production, the meat comes from the village butcher.

Gasenried
Gasenried is situated on a sunny terrace 1650 meters above sea level in the Matter Valley. In this place, much is still original. Things are still done for their own sake. Not to revive traditions or preserve customs, but because life here is still as it has always been. Gasenried is a small village with stables, meadows, pastures, and old, typical Valais houses. A few style contrasts and modern houses also shape the picture. The village is not a museum village, but has been shaped by the lives of its inhabitants. [1, 2]
Of course, you can also experience a lot in Gasenried. In the surroundings, there is a variety of walking and hiking trails. Gasenried is the starting point for high-altitude alpine tours into the Mischabel group and to the Bordier hut. You can explore the area on a bike on the tracks of the 2019 Mountain Bike World Championships.
You live in Gasenried in a unique place and yet you are close to everything that the nearer and wider surroundings have to offer. In the foreground, however, there is always a connection to nature and tranquility, and this quickly becomes contagious. The starting points for tours to some of the most famous Swiss peaks are almost on your doorstep in Gasenried – 38 four-thousand-meter peaks and countless other summits await you.
You can reach Grächen quickly on foot, by mountain bike, or by car. Here you will find all the shops for your daily needs and for sports. There are also many nice restaurants, bars, and cafes there.

Active Gasenried
- There is a variety of walking and hiking trails in the surrounding area.
- Gasenried is the starting point for high-altitude alpine tours into the Mischabel group and to the Bordier hut.
- You can explore the area on a bike on the tracks of the 2019 Mountain Bike World Championships.
- Trail running on the trails of the UTMR, the Grächen mountain run, the Matterhorn Marathon, or to Jungen. Find your personal favorite trail from a variety of possibilities, it will never get boring.
- You will find a tennis facility and a bouldering hall in Sankt Niklaus, just 10 to 15 minutes away from us by car or bus.
- The Matterhorn golf course in Täsch can be reached by car in 30 minutes.
Gasenried is also the ideal “base camp” for exploring the direct surroundings and the Matter Valley.
- Zermatt, the Europahütte, the Saas Valley, or the Augstbord region with their countless possibilities are easily accessible by car, train, or bus. The Täscheralp is our favorite among the “insider tips”
- The starting points for high-altitude alpine tours to some of the most famous Swiss peaks are almost on your doorstep in Gasenried – 38 four-thousand-meter peaks and further summits await you
- The thermal baths of Brigerbad and Leukerbad are also easily accessible by car. The Aletsch region, the underground lake of St. Leonard, and the castles of Sion, Ernen, and the Binntal are further attractive excursion destinations nearby.

- The starting points for many ski tours can be reached quickly from Gasenried.

About us
We come from different countries, have different experiences, educations, and backgrounds, but one thing connects us all – we are mountain people and are happy about every day we are allowed to spend in our unique surroundings.
Ewald
Ewald grew up in Gasenried, he has experienced almost everything here, has walked almost every path, and has done most tasks himself at one time or another. The potatoes for our raclette are from his cultivation.
He loves to share his experiences and adventures, and of course his passion for bees.
How he managed to find the time for his many mountain tours (including a few four-thousand-meter peaks in the area) alongside his many activities, he probably does not even know himself. Even if he rarely goes out nowadays, he always has a few tips ready for ski tourers and hikers.
Ewald also plants the potatoes for our Rösti and for our raclette just below the village. They are cared for by him and dug out by hand, just as generations before him have done.
Helene and Ewald also still produce honey, vegetables, salad, and rye in Gasenried, keeping a long tradition alive.
Jessica
new perspectives from Southern Europe
After several years in the care of residential groups for epilepsy patients, Jessica decided to explore Southern Europe in a motorhome. On this journey, she fell in love with a region in Albania, where she is now building her own permaculture project.
With her positive, open, and curious nature, Jessica also enriches our work. She opens up new perspectives for us and inspires us to think beyond familiar boundaries.
Julie
between mountains and the big city
Julie comes from Savoy and is studying psychology in Lyon. She moves effortlessly between the mountain world and urban life – combining the best of both.
Her German might not be perfect, but she more than makes up for it with openness, curiosity, and a likeable charisma.
We are very much looking forward to working with her.
Alessandro
from the Pacific to the Valais
Alessandro comes from near Vancouver and worked there for many years as an IT engineer. After extensive travels in a camper and on a boat, which took him halfway around the world, he dropped anchor in Gasenried in December.
Inspired by his Italian roots, he interprets the Valais cuisine in his very own way – creatively, authentically, and with an eye for the special.
Florian
good mood as a basic principle
“With us, everything is allowed – except a bad mood.” With this sentence, Florian has shaped the motto for our team.
After several stops around the globe, he has also found his way to the Valais. Here, he interprets life in the mountains in his very own way – with humor, serenity, and an open view of the world.
Margot
deeply rooted in Gasenried
Margot has known Gasenried since her childhood and can tell you every little “secret” of our region. She has worked in many areas of gastronomy, but is above all closely connected to the traditions, the people, and agriculture.
As our most important connection to the local community, she brings in valuable knowledge, stories, and perspectives. We are grateful to be able to learn so much from her.
Zsoldi
Energy, improvisation, and contagious good mood
Zsoldi’s good mood is instantly contagious. The Hungarian with a Swiss accent finds his way in any situation and lends a hand wherever he is needed – with dedication, flexibility, and a good dose of improvisational spirit.
He is one of those people you can simply rely on.
Martin
between north wind and mountain sun
Martin is North German by birth and a Gasenrieder by enthusiasm. Actually, he has a completely different profession, but is happily involved in developing new ideas and projects in our team and can explain to you exactly why Gasenried is “paradise” for him.
